Do you know that there are seven chakras in our body?
Chakras are the whirling energy centers in our subtle body. The word ‘Chakra’ in Sanskrit literally translates as ‘wheel’ or ‘disk’. Chakras are visualized as spinning wheels or flowers with different numbers of petals. Chakras are located in our subtle body. The three main subtle energy channels of our body (nadis) are the Ida (left nadi), Pingala (right nadi) and Sushumna (central nadi) channels, which run along the spinal column. They correspond roughly to the sympathetic, parasympathetic, and central nervous systems. The nadis (energy pathways) run in a curved path, criss-crossing one another several times. At the seven points of intersection along the spine, they form strong energy hubs known as chakras.
I’ve been exploring casually the science of human’s inner space in the last 2 years using power of visualization. It was only last year that I started teaching it in my yoga class. On this Monday, I had an astounding experience with a Fasting group because I was able to take the students beyond their self-imposed limitations of their mind. It not only fundamentally shifted their understanding experientially about power of the mind but also increased their self confidence in their own body and practice. For me, it gave me so much fulfilment in moving them into the space of possibilities which is the real purpose of Yoga.
Basically, what I did was I took them through a simple experiment of showing them the power of visualization in integrating the intention and body-mind into creating a new reality in their practice. Next, I performed the different yoga sequences like Surya Namaskar and a few challenging postures while they observed my movements and body language. Then they visualized themselves performing the exact movements in their inner space and finally they just moved into manifesting the same thing in reality.
That year was 2005, one evening I had my 1.5 year old son playing besides me on a bed and suddenly a negative thought came into my inner space – “What if I die at this moment?” Suddenly, I experienced an intense fear through out the whole body with my heart palpitating in such a fast speed. Having learned yoga since 2000, I knew the spirit is eternal but I also understood that it had not become my own experience yet. The immediate next thought I had was – “I need to learn how to meditate and start understanding the deeper truth in life.”
