Body vs. Soul

The question is – body or soul, which path should a practitioner focus initially?

A few months ago, one of my students who is a Tibetan Buddhist, was puzzled about the large number of Tibetan Buddhist teachers who are suffering from stomach cancer. This raised some fundamental questions such as – Isn’t the meditation on a daily basis supposed to bring health and free one from diseases? Why particularly the stomach cancer, not other forms of cancer? What are they missing in the spiritual practice?

To answer these questions, let us go back to the beginning of Yoga. You may have read that Hatha Yoga is a system conceived as a traditional holistic path in the Vedic Tradition which includes asanas (postures), mudras (hand gestures), pranayama (controlled breathing) and dhyana (meditation) as instruments to balance the body-mind system.  A good level of health and psychological integration must be attained before delving into deeper aspects of yoga – Raja Yoga which primarily concerns with the mind i.e. the more subtle dimension of our existence.

The Happening

Don’t Allow Opinions and Gossips in Your Inner Space

Are you one of those people who make decisions by the opinions or appraisals of others? Do gossips among your social network cause disturbance to you even though you know it is not true?

In today’s Digital Age, we are surrounded by all forms of opinions, gossips, appraisals, sometimes even all kinds of irresponsible defamation in the social media.  We’ve seen how people fall into depression or even turn suicidal just because they are not able to handle what they read or hear in the social media or workplace.

A study was done in USA from 120 college students and they found that gossips changed their own opinions and the influence of gossip remained even the people had personal interactions. This experiment showed the power of social conditioning and the weakness of human mind because they rather believe what others are telling than trusting their personal experience.

How can we go beyond social coditioning and not allow any negative influence into our inner space?
