Yoga: Living in a different zone of existence

The year was 2009 when I first heard the discourse on Yoga Sutra of Patanjali as interpreted by a living incarnation, Paramahamsa Nithyananda (fondly known as Swamiji). Patanjali, the great sage declares that the state of Yoga is the cessation of mental patterns where one lives in a different zone of existence of limitlessness and total understanding. To me, it felt something beyond my limited logic and far-flung at that time since I was not able to fathom this truth, let alone experiencing it.

Fast forward to January 2016, as I read the 3rd verse of the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali again, suddenly it just clicked within me – “Hey! This is the zone I am living now!” I was too ecstatic with this revelation!

The 3rd Yoga Sutra states ‘Tada drau swarupe vasthanum’, it means “This results in relaxation into one’s true nature of limitlessness and total understanding.”

The first insight we need to know is that anything we can experience again and again is a pattern. Any experience we can enter into and come out of it is just a mental pattern. By this definition, even our sleep is a pattern since we go in and come out every night. It is a pattern.

Here is the truth – whatever you see and experience in the outer world is because of your thought patterns. Your thought patterns create the life that you experience. You could be experiencing the same situation but a different comment by different person could trigger a feeling of deep suffering or a feeling of joy and relaxation. Just see how your thought patterns can influence your response in situations and even life crisis. Without even your knowledge, your life is being run by thought patterns. It is the thought patterns which keep the mind alive!

The second insight is the way to stop the mental patterns is to take the responsibility to complete whatever hangovers you created as mental patterns and relax from everything in complete completion – the consciousness. Yoga Sutra teaches us that only when we really relax from everything, we are established in our own true self. The moment the thoughts disappear, when the cessation of mental patterns happens, when the chitta-vrittis (mental patterns) are no more, it results in relaxation into one’s own true nature. When you are able to have your mind under your control, that freedom is what Patanjali called being established in your true nature.

How to stop the mental patterns? You may ask!

From my experience, the quickest way is to find a living master who is already radiating the state of Yoga. This is what I did. In last December, I attended a 21-day yoga spiritual inner awakening retreat in Phuket called Nithyanandoham 1008 conducted by Swamiji. In this mystical process, he purified the muscles memory and bio memory by removing all patterns I created in these 2 layers and he awakened the bio energy in me. The bio energy is the God particle that exists in all of us.

Now it has been almost 3 weeks since I came back from this program. Like many others who are experiencing the powers and miracles, I am also seeing many changes at different aspects of my existence. At the physical body level, the body feels totally new and young with great flexibility and possibility. There is no sign of tiredness as the body is constantly radiating such high energy, frankly I even forget how tiredness feels like because the tiredness pattern has been totally erased from the muscles memory. The mind feels so clear and it falls into silence, the thoughtless zone whenever I bring restful awareness or whenever the mind is needed for planning, I can just switch it on. It is such a great freedom to be able to relax into my true nature. Another extraordinary thing I discovered is that whenever I am in the zone of Yoga, I can direct my awareness into anything I want clarity or answers.  For example, I have just started writing my next book, just by focusing my awareness on the book, the space is intelligent enough to show me the key points I should write in my inner space. The understanding happens in the space of complete completion. I am just too thrilled to discover this fascinating conscious playground called Yoga.

I remembered Swamiji explained further that “In whichever areas you turn your consciousness, you will have complete clarity in that dimension about that truth. It will be waiting to reveal all its mysteries to you. All you need to do is just look into it. You will be able to connect with it and receive all the information and secrets and mysteries. You can download all the information you need from Cosmos. This is what Patanjali means when he says – limitlessness and total understanding.” This is such an amazing truth which is now becoming an experience itself for me after coming back from Nithyanandoham retreat!

In essence, if you are a Yogi living in a thoughtless zone, you literally live in a different zone of existence because you are experiencing oneness with consciousness, Existence. Your life will be filled with constant excitement, powers and miracles. Namaste 😀

Mind is an action, you can stop it!

Are you struggling to still your restless mind?
Do you find it impossible to stop your inner chatters?

If this is what you find a challenge, the insight from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali will bring you the right understanding and solution to go beyond the mind.

In the second Yoga Sutra, it states that ‘Yogaha chitta vritti nirodhaha’, meaning ‘Withdrawal from mental patterns is Yoga’. This is the essence of Yoga as captured by Patanjali – a great sage who compiled the Yoga sutras in a systematic and scientific way more than 5,000 years ago.

In order for you to appreciate this truth and connect with the higher consciousness, you need to come into the present moment – NOW and come into the space of pure listening in order to catch the subtle dimension of the MIND which was revealed by my master, Paramahamsa Nithyananda (fondly known as Swamiji). He opened up this profound understanding of the subtle mind in me!

First of all, he said that mind is not an object or a thing as we are taught by society, it is an action. Mind is not a thing to struggle with, suppress or destroy, mind is an action. Just like you are walking as an action, if you don’t feel like walking, you just sit down. When you don’t feel like talking anymore, you just shut your mouth and be in silence. In the same way, mind is an action, if you don’t want it to think anymore, you can stop it. That’s all.

However, you will say ‘No, I have already tried this in many ways, it doesn’t work for me!’ The truth is thinking is a simple yet subtle action, you are doing it, nobody else inside you is doing it. You are the only one who is responsible for the mind to go on in action.

Second, if you feel that the thinking comes back again after sometime, be very clear, it comes back because you want it to come back. At any moment, if you really don’t want it, you can just stop it. Whenever the mind comes back, it is simply because you want it to come back. You have the complete freedom to switch it off and start it again but the problem is you forget that it is YOU who have started it again due to your unawareness of this subtle truth. If you have this basic clarity that you are the one starting the mind, at least you will not feel powerless in front of your mind because you respect your decision. Just understand – “When I want the mind, I am starting it. When I don’t want it, I am relaxing from it.”

The essence of Yoga is only this one sutra – yogaha chitta vritti nirodhaha, Yoga is cessation of mind. Yoga is withdrawal from mental patterns. Mind is not a thing, it is an action which is entirely in your hands. This sutra has to be approached with openness and devotion of the space it is delivered. You will have the same click as I had if you can just bring a cognitive shift in the understanding. Just knowing this simple truth makes me feel powerful to handle my mind intelligently and effortlessly.

Third, you don’t need the mind to be alive. We always think that mind is bigger than the brain. Swamiji’s guru – Yogi Yogananda Puri once revealed that the mind is just one action of the brain. See, when you are asleep or in silence, your brain continues to operate your daily life, your brain is able to keep your body functioning perfectly. So understand, the mind is just one part of your brain – this is the shift you need to have. If you have the courage to switch off your mind as and when it is not required, the mind becomes your slave as it is under your full control. If not, you are a slave to your mind!

Lastly, Swamiji shared that “Living your life without what you call as mind is living enlightenment.” Living independent of the mind is what he called as living enlightenment. To live with the freedom of the mind, you need to take the responsibility completely on your shoulders. The moment you feel you are responsible for your thinking, you know very clearly that you can stop it. Only when you don’t want to take responsibility, you resort to postponing life or blaming life. We need to take responsibility for our subtle action – which is the mind, and knowing when to stop the mind so that we can get back to the natural space of completion and vibrant silence.

In short, Yoga means being able to play with your mind or completely relax from it. Namaste 😀

Liberate yourself from negative emotions

Do you know how to go beyond negative emotions such as anger, depression, greed or fear?

I’ve learned a very powerful technique from a living enlightened master, Paramahamsa Nithyananda which enables me to liberate myself from negative emotions. He said that “There is a truth from Vedanta i.e. whenever some emotions happen within your system, it is like a shower of rain that happens in your being. There are particular cells that catch these emotions. For example, the first time anger is showered on us, if we are affected for 10 mins, then the next time it will become 20 mins. By the third time, it will be 30 mins. This is how the emotion becomes stronger and stronger when we cooperate with these negative emotions in our being and we create the same type of mood in us again and again. Not only will the emotion get recorded in us, we will express the same thing on others like our kids and people whom we work with.

Why is this so?

Since the basic quality of life is reproduction and expansion, this is the survival instinct governed by the 2nd chakra (swadhisthana) – the fear energy center within our body. Reproduction is governed by the 1st chakra (mooladhara) – the sex energy center in our body. Both these energy centers are closely connected.

By the law of nature, the cells that catch the anger emotion will start reproducing and each cell creates another 5-6 more cells. Next time, when the anger shower happens in you, all these new cells will catch the same emotion and becomes the size of the original cells. Now, they will also start reproducing. By the 3rd time when the anger shower happens again, all these cells catch the emotion and start storing it. This is why every time when we are showered with the same emotion, it becomes stronger and we lose control of that emotion.

When a particular negative emotion rises in you, just don’t cooperate with it. Let your body not go behind that emotion whether it is anger, irritation or depression or lust or fear or anything. Within 3 or 4 times, you will be liberated from that emotion. You will have the key now in your hand – how not to be taken away but that emotion? How to be centered in your Self? Whether it is anger or fear or greed, it gets more power only if your body also cooperates with it. With whatever emotion your body moves, that emotion gets recorded inside your system. And that emotion will become much more intense.

People think that life runs on fear and greed. Mahavira, a great enlightened Jain master from India says that “When you come to planet earth, you bring enough energy to fulfil all your desires. You already have enough fuel. You always think – if I stop fuelling myself with fear and greed, I may stop working.”

The truth is we have enough potential energy to maintain ourselves and achieve what we want in life without fear and greed. We just need to trust that we don’t need fear or greed to run our life. There is already a reserve of fuel within us, we just need to learn how to tap into this endless energy source through spiritual knowledge and practices. Namaste 😀
